Sydney The Dream

Sydney Featured: Opera House

Sydney along with Melbourne was part of my 2014 Australia vacation. Australia had been a top destination on my bucket list for the longest time. I always envisioned it to be the gateway to exquisite natural wonders and immense wildlife. The first place that came to mind when I thought of Australia was Sydney so I was extremely excited to finally get the chance to visit. I went in May/June and spent a total of 9 days 8 nights in Sydney.

Below is a recollection of my experience in Sydney. For a list of top attractions not to be missed in Sydney check out my other post.

Journey

Melbourne (MEL) β†’ Sydney (SYD)

Total Flight Time: 1 hr 25 mins

Culture

Syney Australia CBD

By the time I arrived in Sydney I was already accustomed to the culture down under since I had just finished traveling around Melbourne. Sydney definitely had more of that big city feel to it, the hustle and bustle of urban life, the whole shebang. It was more of a fast-paced environment. Sydney also appeared cleaner and the locals seemed to dress more fashionably compared to Melbourne.

Memories

Vivid Sydney Light Festival
  • Spotting a pod of wild dolphins swimming by Bondi Beach- so cool!
  • Remarkable light displays for the Vivid Sydney festival
  • Pampering ourselves with a relaxing spa day
  • Thrilling ride on the Sydney Harbour Jet
  • Chocolate galore at Lindt Cafe
  • Getting lost wandering the Royal Botanic Garden
  • A phenomenal meal at a super busy Thai restaurant we stumbled upon
  • Stunning views at Blue Mountains
  • Marveling at beautiful rock formations at Jenolan Caves
  • Whale watching cruise- my poor sister got seasick along with a ton of other passengers on deck; fortunately I was fine and was able to see some humpback whales

Although I had a great experience in Sydney, I have to admit I was a little disappointed but only because I had gone in with the anticipation that I would love it. It lacked a bit of character and felt like just another big city to me. Don’t get me wrong, Sydney is definitely an incredible city with loads to see and do. It’s just that because I had dreamt of visiting for such a long time it didn’t really live up to my high expectations. To my surprise I actually ended up liking the overall vibe of Melbourne more.
