Macau is known around the world as “Vegas of the East.” Apart from its gambling reputation it is also popular for its tourist attractions, delectable eats, and outstanding entertainment. I went to Macau for a day trip from Hong Kong during my big Asia tour in April 2015. Here’s an overview of my trip which will hopefully provide you with ideas for a 1-day itinerary in Macau.
Journey
TurboJET Ferry: Hong Kong β Macau
Total Ride Time: 1 hr
Culture
Macau is a blend of Chinese and Portuguese culture which is evident in their cuisine and architecture. Their acclaimed Portuguese egg tarts are oh so tasty! The gambling industry is huge and there are a ton of hotel-casinos deeming it a mini Las Vegas. It very much felt like a resort town bustling with tourists.
Top Attractions
These are the places we were able to squeeze in during our short time in Macau:
Ruins of St. Paul’s
The Ruins of St. Paul’s is the iconic historical landmark of Macau. It is what remains of the significant religious complex.
It’s the post card image of Macau and is definitely a must-see on your visit.
Senado Square
Senado Square is a large public square situated in the heart of Macau. The square is filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes.
Rua do Cunha
Rua do Cunha is a narrow pedestrian lane lined with souvenir shops and stores selling traditional Macanese snacks.
Koi Kei Bakery
Koi Kei Bakery is famous for its delicious peanut candy as well as the TVB drama Brother’s Keeper. They sell a variety of other tasty treats including almond cookies, egg rolls, and more. They also provide ample samples which will surely satisfy your sweet tooth.
Cotai Strip
Cotai Strip is a lively section of Macau where the casinos and hotels are located. We went casino hopping and tried our luck on the slot machines but unfortunately didn’t hit the jackpot.
Last Impression
I think one full day is sufficient time to see the major highlights of Macau but I recommend at least two days to not feel rushed and be able to explore more.
In the short time frame I spent in Macau the overall vibe I got was that it was very touristy. If I get the chance to visit again I would tour the other areas outside of the main attractions.
So if you’re in Hong Kong it is definitely worth taking the quick ferry over to nearby Macau for a easy day trip. Check out my guide for a list of top attractions in Hong Kong.
