The first time I went to Laos was in 2010 during my very first overseas trip and I spent 3 weeks there. I went again in 2016 but I just stayed for a few days prior to my Thailand trip. I have family in Vientiane which means I got the ultimate local experience both visits.

Vientiane is the vibrant capital located on the bank of Mekong River. Luang Prabang is a charming mountainside town. Vieng Vang is a lively tourist-oriented town. Wherever you go rest assured you can explore on the cheap.

Embrace the distinct culture. Visit a few temples and admire their ornate designs. Traverse through town on a motorbike. Try haggling at the night markets. If there is one thing you must do in Laos it would be to visit Kuang Si Falls. It’s by far one of my top favorite waterfalls in the world!

Lao cuisine is often modest but rich in smell and packed with flavors. Sticky rice is the national staple and a must-try food item. I grew up eating my fair share of Lao dishes so be sure to check out my foodie guide on what to eat in Laos.

Because Laos was my first time traveling abroad it will always hold a special place in my heart. It was definitely an eye opener to experience local lifestyle. It also ignited my wanderlust and paved the way for countless trips around the globe.

Hopefully these 10 photos will inspire you to visit Laos. For more information check out my recommendations for top attractions from a local.
