Top Attractions in Iceland- glaciers, volcanoes, geysers

Iceland, the land of fire and ice, is well known around the globe for its extraordinary landscapes including glaciers, volcanoes, geysers, waterfalls, and much more. Everywhere you look is like something straight out of a calendar. It’s a great destination year-round with both winter and summer offering completely unique experiences. Here is my list of 11 top attractions not to be missed on your trip to Iceland.

1. Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is a natural wonder of Iceland. It’s filled with magnificent icebergs of all shapes and sizes drifting about. The water is a combination of freshwater and seawater which gives it a distinctive shade of blue. Adorable seals and various birds can be spotted around the lagoon.

Wander Tip: In the warmer months boat tours of Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon are available giving you the chance to sail among the massive chunks of ice.

2. Haukadalur

Haukadalur is a remarkable geothermal area consisting of geysers, hot springs, and mud pots. It’s home to the famous Great Geysir and Strokkur. Witnessing the natural phenomenon of a geyser eruption is a surreal experience and definitely a must-do.

Wander Tip: Strokkur is a very active geyser erupting approximately every 4-8 minutes so make sure not to miss it!

3. Gullfoss

Gullfoss is an iconic cascading waterfall on the popular Golden Circle sightseeing route. You’ll be awestruck observing the mighty currents as the dramatic flow of water passes through the canyon of glacial river Hvita.

4. Thingvellir National Park

Wander Tip: Take the once-in-a- lifetime opportunity to walk between two continents on the Almannagja path!

5. Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is a world-renowned geothermal spa surrounded by picturesque scenery with a relaxing ambience. The milky blue water which is rich in silica and sulfur is believed to have numerous skin benefits. Free silica mud is provided at the pool for guests to enjoy as a face mask. Recharge and regain some tranquility as you soak in the mineral water.

Wander Tip: Best to visit in the evening if you want to avoid the crowd. If you’re lucky you might even catch the northern lights.

Diamond Beach is a black sand beach in close proximity to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon on the South Coast of Iceland. Although there are no actual “diamonds” on this beach, you’ll find a rather impressive display of washed-up iceberg pieces glistening against the volcanic black sand.

Wander Tip: Diamond Beach is a prime spot for viewing orcas from the shore.

9. Vatnajokull

Vatnajokull is one of the largest glaciers in all of Europe. It’s the centerpiece of Iceland’s enormous Vatnajokull National Park which is a hot spot for glacier hikes, snowmobiling, and ice cave tours.

10. Skogafoss

Skogafoss is an amazing waterfall located near Seljalandsfoss. It’s one of the biggest waterfalls in the country. The cool thing about Skogafoss is that you can walk up-close to the base but make sure to dress properly because you will get wet.

Wander Tip: Rainbows are often seen here so be on the lookout.

11. Northern Lights

The northern lights are hues of green that illuminate the sky during Mother Nature’s magical lightshow. Iceland is one of the top countries in the world to catch this spectacular phenomenon. It is truly an unforgettable experience and should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Wander Tip: The best months to view the aurora borealis are from September through April.


My #1 Pick

Iceland is actually one of my top favorite destinations in the world. From this list I like the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon the most. The giant icebergs drifting with the roaring waves are out of this world. I’m a sucker for beautiful winter scenery and for me Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is the quintessential Icelandic landscape.


So if you’re taking a trip to Iceland you will definitely want to visit these 11 top attractions!
